O processo de consolidação de frentes urbanas

Abstract

O tema da dissertação é a consolidação de frentes urbanas. O estudo estrutura-se em três partes. A primeira parte é fortemente apoiada no livro ‘Urban forms, the dead and life of the urban block’, começando por descrever o modo como ao longo do século XX, a ocupação tradicional do quarteirão (ocupando todo o seu perímetro) foi dando lugar a modos de implantação cada vez mais livres, numa lógica de transformação em que o edifício isolado se torna cada vez mais importante. Em seguida analisam-se três projetos claramente distintos no que se refere ao modo como encaram as pré-existências: a Biblioteca de Groningen de Giorgio Grassi, uma habitação colectiva na Rua Costa Cabral, no Porto de Viana de Lima e, por último, o Palace Hotel em Brasília de Oscar Niemeyer. A terceira parte constitui uma refelexão sobre o projeto de um hotel para o quarteirão do Parque das Camélias no Porto – reflexão essa que se suporta quer na análise da história do quarteirão urbano ao longo do século XX, quer no estudo dos três edifícios referidos. Por fim, apresenta-se um conjunto de conclusões.

The theme of the dissertation is the consolidation of urban frontages. The study is divided into three parts. The first part draws heavily on the book 'Urban forms, the dead and life of the urban block'. It starts by describing how, throughout the twentieth century, the traditional occupation of the street block (occupying the whole block perimeter) gave way to increasingly free modes, in a logic of transformation in which the isolated building becomes increasingly important. Then we analyze three clearly distinct projects, in terms of how the preexistences are dealt with: the Library Groningen by Giorgio Grassi, a collective housing in Rua Costa Cabral, Porto by Viana de Lima Porto and the Palace Hotel in Brasilia by Oscar Niemeyer. The third part is reflection on a project for hotel located in the street block of Parque das Camélias in Porto – this reflection is supported both on the analysis of the history of the street block over the twentieth century and the study of the three buildings mentioned above. Finally, it presents a number of conclusions.
